Protest Math

I must correct myself at one point about the Hungarian situation. Like many uncritical people on both sides, I just grossly overestimated the significance of this love march for the government.

The right-wing has just shown that they can still beat us in protest math. So what? Does this mean the people, the "men on the street" still love the government? No. Fidesz has made it once again what they made for eight long years. That's it. That's the story. No more and no less. As you might already know, the Hungarian right-wing has an idiosyncratic feature compared to their western counterparts: they have a voracious appetite for massive public rallies.

If I were paranoid enough, I would sure as hell claim that this pathologically selfish and childish fat-ass with all of his obnoxiously tasteless buffoonery and the personality of a pampered five-year-old is the invention of the Copyright Mafia to demonize the file-sharing movement.

Yesterday's "peace march" was a truly astonishing PR stunt. After more than 20 months of amok from a government doing its very best to make some policy against both sides in as many issues as possible, finding so many brain-dead morons to march for them is a genuinely remarkable feat of organizing skills.

A so-called “blackout” is yet another gimmick, albeit a dangerous one, designed to punish elected and administration officials who are working diligently to protect American jobs from foreign criminals. It is our hope that the White House and the Congress will call on those who intend to stage this “blackout” to stop the hyperbole and PR stunts and engage in meaningful efforts to combat piracy.

Orbitron Megacivil Megaharcos ezt a zseniális epigrammát küldte válaszul az előbb publikált jegyzetemre. Eredetileg azzal indított, hogy amit írok, az nem hülyeség, hiszen - idézem: "a Milla és a Szolidaritás Gyurcsány és a DK seggében van tövig". Ezt nevezem, baszki! Pure genius!

Urgent call for unity

Egyszerre vannak jó dolgok és szar dolgok. Az a baj, hogy a szar mindig jobban látszik...

Már a WiFi-átnevezős kampány után felébredt bennem a gyanú, hogy a Millában valami nagyon nincs rendben, és ez a gyanúm azóta megerősödött! Habár Juhász Péter személye és az LMP-képviselők kitiltása eddig sem túl sok jót sejtetett, viszont azóta egy kicsit bedurvult a helyzet, úgyhogy a köcsögség valamivel látványosabb.

Például a február 2-i tüntetéstől mi a fasznak kellett elhatárolódni? Vagy a Hírszerző hazudik? Természetesen a Hírszerző minden, csak nem szent, de azért az egyik cikkük mindenesetre elgondolkodtató:

'In time' is a very nice (well, watchable) class war movie for the end of this turbulent year, with a message simple enough for the working masses to grasp. That's what I love in the Hollywood left!

The dialectic of history

What Hegel says is that basically everything is understood in a dialectic process. On the individual as well as on the social level. This is the reason why he said "philosophy is the history of philosophy". This is one of his famous remarks. But we could just as well say "physics is the history of physics" with the same authority, for that matter!

The duty of philosophy

The duty of philosophy is not to solve problems, but to redefine problems! To show how what we experience as a problem is a false problem. If it is a true problem, then we don't need philosophy. For example, let's say that now there would be a deadly virus coming from outer space - so not in any way mediated through our human history - and it would threaten all of us. Basically, we don't need philosophy there. We need good science to stop this virus. We don't need philosophy, because the threat is real. You cannot play philosophical tricks and say "no, this is not a threat", or whatever. You know what I mean? The threat is there. You can see it.

Simple abstractions, when applied outside the domain of classical Newtonian physics, usually don't get us closer to understanding the whole truth, but this one might be useful to understand Germany.

Nehéz ügy, amikor az ember egyik barátjáról kiderül, hogy fideszes. Régen is nehéz volt, de most még nehezebb. Azt gondolom, ma már elmúlt az az idő, amikor még hidakat lehetett építeni és árkokat tömködni. Mostanában legfeljebb csáklyás létrákat érdemes építeni és ágyúkat tömködni.

Elmúlt az az idő, amikor még egy erőteljesebb Fidesz-kritika után az ember látni vélhette Andrej Zsdanov szellemét előbújni a palackból... (Vagyis éppenhogy most van az az idő, amikor konkrétan előbújik, csak épp a másik oldalon.)

The paradox of anti-speciesism

Yesterday evening I've met some animal rights activists on the Königstrasse of Stuttgart. This one is a long and broad street reserved for pedestrian use. It's a little bit like the Vaci street of Budapest. However, unlike its Hungarian counterpart, the street itself is a little bit like some antique Agora instead of a bunch of poorly disguised attempts to rip off brain-dead tourists.

However, it must be noted to the defense of the German political system, that the parties and a media are being quite furious about the whole thing, determined to kick the National Democratic Party (NPD) completely out of legality. Even the right-wing CDU wants them out of the state parliaments.

Many Germans are feeling the same as me, and not only on the left.

In Hungary, there was a similar killing spree - with victims including little children - after years of far-right provocation about "gypsy crime". The Hungarian media and parties reacted with... Well, nothing, actually.

Az Apple fővezérének halálára épülő globális tömegkultusz lassanként már Elvis Presley és Michael Jackson reputációjával vetekszik. Talán még örülhetnék is, mint leendő informatikus, hogy egy elhunyt kollégát világhódító popkirályokhoz méltó tisztelgéssel búcsúztatnak el. Most már csak az hiányzik, hogy szentté avassák!
